- Horses have to be older than 3 yrs old
- Duration of a therapy is 10 minutes
- Horses are usually treated with two to three treatments administered at three week intervals
- Hair over the target area is clipped and the shock waves are transmitted into the horses body through a fluid or gel filled cushion
- Use of a coupling gel is usually necessary to optimize shock wave transmission and to minimuze energy loss
- Sedatives and manual restraint are necessary in standing horses (because of noise and considerable irritation)
- Under ultrasonographic control with a high quality "MyLab 30" tenden probe the lesions are focused and treated with the focused ESWT
- Because the direct local analgesic effect after the application, the horse needs 4 days of stall rest
- A mild to moderate swelling and skin abrasions may be observed immediately after the end of application
